"I'm scared," Amy says.
"You shouldn't be," Donna replies. "You'll be a great mother." She rests her hand on her rounded stomach. "And, anyway, I'm the one who's going to have to push her out."
"That's the easy part, though, isn't it?"
Donna narrows her eyes. "Not really. You know I'm going to squeeze your hand extra hard during labor, right?"
"I mean..." Amy shakes her head. "Never mind."
"No, it's okay. What do you mean?"
"I mean what you've gotta be thinking about, too. Raising a kid. Having people make fun of her. Having her ask about her father. How could you not be terrified?"
Donna shrugs. "I am," she says. "But I'm letting the happiness win out."
Amy interlaces her fingers with Donna's. She can feel the baby move under their hand, and Donna smiles. For a moment, all she can think about is how much she loves them.
She's still scared to death.
