More Than Friends by Sunny
Toby looked up from his desk to find Josh standing in his doorway staring absently at the wall. "Hey, Josh. What's up?"
Josh continued to stand there unmoving, blinking and barely breathing.
"JOSH," Toby said sharply which brought the younger man out of his reverie.
"Hey Toby. What's up," Josh asked.
"That's what I asked," Toby replied. "What's going on?"
"Nothing," Josh said shortly as he moved further into the room. "I just got off the phone with Sam."
"Yeah? How's he doing," Toby asked as he continued to eye him with concern.
Josh flopped onto a chair. "He's good. He's going to spend some time with his Mom."
"Good," Toby nodded. "Did he say when he was coming back."
Josh laughed. "That's the thing, he said he's not coming back. He's going to establish himself in Los Angeles and then run again in the next election."
"Really," Toby drawled. "What about you?"
"What about me," Josh asked sitting up straighter in the chair. "I'm right where I wanted to be."
"I thought you and Sam were friends," Toby prodded lightly.
"We are," Josh defended. "I mean, we've been more than friends…"
"I know," Toby cut in. "That's why I'm asking."
"You know," Josh repeated. "How do you… what do you know?"
"I know that you and Sam have been lovers for several years," Toby said quietly. Josh squirmed in his seat. "Sam told me."
Toby hesitated before continuing. "He told me a long time ago after something happened."
"What? The shooting," Josh inquired.
Toby shook his head. "My divorce."
Toby sighed as he rubbed his face. It was his turn to squirm a little in his chair. "After my divorce," Toby explained. "I was lonely and I was looking for some company. Sam and I had a couple beers here in the office and I made a pass at him. That's when he told me about his relationship with you."
"Did you and he…" Josh trailed off.
"No! He didn't want to take advantage of me in a weakened condition," Toby stated. "We never did anything Josh. He was very faithful to you. At least where I was concerned."
Josh nodded. "We had an agreement that we could fuck any women we wanted but other men were off limits."
Toby laughed. "That's kind of weird."
"It worked for us," Josh shrugged. "But now it's over. We decided it would be best to end our relationship."
"We or he?" Toby asked.
Josh blew out a deep breath of air. "Want to get drunk?"
"Are you still lonely," Josh asked.
"Josh," Toby said warningly.
"I'm just saying," Josh began. "That I wouldn't mind being taken advantage of. Seeing how I'm a free man and all."
"Let's get drunk," Toby said as he put on his coat. "We'll play the rest of it by ear."
"Fine by me," Josh said as he led the way out of Toby's office.
